İSTÖP scientists propose solutions for the Gulf of İzmir

The Scientific Board of İSTÖP (İzmir Civil Society Organisations Platform) has published its comprehensive report on the Gulf of İzmir. A press statement said the report, prepared over about four months, offers solutions to the gulf’s pollution, one of the city’s most serious environmental problems.
The statement noted that İSTÖP, founded in 2005 with the participation of 120 civil society organisations and 100 scientists, has carried out many national and international projects, and described the report on the Gulf of İzmir as a “recipe for rescue”.
According to the statement, the study by the 20-member scientific board contains in-depth analyses of many subjects, from urban development to waste management and from stream rehabilitation to industrial waste, and offers a roadmap to the city’s administrators.
Key topics of the report
A strategic plan for İzmir’s urban growth and development
Coastal ring road and infrastructure projects
A model for an undersea wastewater treatment plant
Sewerage and stormwater master plans
Rehabilitation of stream beds and flood control
Creating current corridors in the gulf
Industrial and medical waste management projects
A protection and use plan for the Gediz Delta
The İSTÖP Scientific Board stressed that the report is not just a set of findings but also contains workable projects, and serves as a strategic guide for İzmir’s future.
In an interview, İSTÖP President Mehmet Aydoğan said: “On behalf of the people of İzmir, I extend my gratitude to the members of our scientific board, who have volunteered for months for our beautiful İzmir and prepared these proposals and projects. All the scientists on this board are invaluable to İzmir, and their work will not be forgotten for many years.”
